The Peltz homestead was built between The Grand Pacific Hotel and The Depositor's Bank building by John Smith in 1898. A crucial moment came in the Fire of 1912, which destroyed surrounding buildings to the north. When the water supply from the pumper truck was depleted, the firefighters and the townspeople formed a makeshift bucket brigade, miraculously saving the homestead.
